On Thursday, September 20, 2018, the girls Track and Field team were honored in a ceremony that was held at Buford Academy for their state championship they won last Spring. The girls were presented with their rings for winning the state AAAAAA championship during the ceremony which was largely hosted by the Director of Track & Field, Fyrone Davis and Girls Head Coach, Crystal Fowler.
The girls’ track team was a fairly young team with only one senior, Sierra Sieracki to lend her veteran experience to the younger members. Though the team was a relatively young bunch, they did not lack for raw talent and sheer grit. Their coaches said that these young ladies put the work in and the results showed what they put into it.
Coach Fowler went over some of the girls’ stats and impressive is an understatement. Here are just the stats from the state championship meet. (All grades mentioned were from the 2017-2018 school year.) Sieracki came in 4th place in the high jump. Sophomore Kimberly Harris came in 1st place in the long jump and 400 M. Freshman Trinity Price took home 1st in the 200M and 2nd in the 400M. Junior Alexa Rossum came in 1st in the 100M. Brittany Johnson finished the 800M in 5th. The 4 x 100 team of Harris, Price, Alexa Rossum, Trinity Rossum, and alternate Preston Reid came in 1st place. The girls walked home with the 2018 GHSA 5A State Championship.
Each member received a gift bag and of course, their rings in boxes. After a short video of season highlights and interviews, the girls were allowed to look at their rings. The excitement and joy on their faces lit up the room. Hugs and celebrations were nonstop. Interim Superintendent Mrs. Joy Davis and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rita Cantrell were on hand to congratulate the girls on a job well done.
The ladies of the Buford High School Track & Field team are expected to be a very competitive group again this year who plan on bringing home another ring in the Spring. We will be sure to be there to watch the journey. Congrats ladies!
