  • Buford wrestlers set to compete for state titles

    All 14 members of the Wolves wrestling team qualified for the state tournament during the GHSA AAAAAA sectional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5.

    “We wrestled really well, probably the best we have all season,” said head coach Tom Beuglas.  “We won some tough matches and have put ourselves in a good position to be successful this weekend at state.”

    Rylan Ibold (106), Kieron McCormack (113), Maddox McArthur (120), Drew Gorman (126), Talen Thompson (152) and Trelain Maddox (220) all placed first in their weight classes.

    “Our lightweights (Ibold, McCormack, McArthur and Gorman) continued their impressive run and seem to beat whoever is in front of them,” Beuglas said.

    Tyler Henley (132), Gavin Pope (138), Grayson Santee (160) and Conor McCloskey (170) all placed second. JT McCullough (145), Aaron Riner (182) and Eddrick Houston (285) placed third. Ben Martin (195) placed fifth, also earning a spot at the state tournament.

    “Eddrick Houston had a great day, winning five matches to come back and get third,” Beuglas added. “Trelain Maddox absolutely dominated his weight class as well.”

    The Wolves wrestling team was set to travel to Macon for the GHSA state tournament today, Thursday, Feb. 10, and the tournament will continue Friday, Feb. 11.

  • Two candidates qualify for Sugar Hill City Council special election

    Two candidates have qualified to seek a seat on the Sugar Hill City Council in an upcoming special election. 

    Alvin Hicks and Mike Sullivan will vie for City Council Post 4, which was previously held by Nic Greene, who submitted his resignation to the city on Monday, Jan. 3.

    The special election will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at Sugar Hill City Hall at 5039 W. Broad St.   

    Hicks, who has lived in Sugar Hill for the past seven years, works in network operations for AT&T and has been with the company for 19 years. 

    “I am not a politician,” he said, “and I feel that I will offer a different perspective. I also want to be a voice for all of Sugar Hill.”

    Sullivan, a 24-year resident of Sugar Hill, is a software engineer manager and previously served on the Sugar Hill City Council. 

    “I am the only council member that I know that once he stepped down … that has kept attending the meetings and kept my finger on the pulse,” Sullivan said. “A lot of that is due to my work on the Youth Council.” 

    Sullivan is the community sponsor for the Sugar Hill Youth Council, which provides opportunities for youth to learn about local government operations. 

    Sullivan said his decision to run for Sugar Hill City Council was spur of the moment. 

    “I’ve got 16 years invested in the city,” he said. “I felt like there was a need, so I stepped up.”
