SUWANEE – All lanes of I-985NB and I-85NB in Suwanee have been reopened after they had been closed for hours on Saturday night due to a fatality crash.

Officers with the North Precinct along with firefighters from the Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to a vehicle crash shortly after 6:30 p.m. on I-85NB at the I-985 split.

Calls into 9-1-1 reported that a vehicle was on its side and engulfed in flames.

Other motorists stopped to pull victims out of the burning vehicle and render aid.

The wreck caused the deaths of six adults, as well as injuring several others. The ones sustaining injuries were transported to hospitals throughout the metro area. One bystander has minor injuries but refused transport.

According to the police, all six fatalities came from the burning vehicle which was a passenger van.

The identities of the victims are not being released at this time. Police expect to release more information in the coming days.

“Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the crash.  Based on statements at the scene, another vehicle may have been directly or indirectly involved in this incident,” said Sgt. Michelle Pihera, information officer with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
