American Legion Auxiliary invites public to support Valentine’s Day dance fundraiser

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 127 will once again host its Valentine’s Day dance at the American Legion Post 127 in Sugar Hill. Once a longtime annual event, the yearly tradition for the post was interrupted by COVID and the group’s move from its old site to the new location. This will be the group’s first Valentine’s Day dance since 2019.

A $5 per person cover charge opens the door to an evening of entertainment and fun, featuring music from the band Motown Showdown. Proceeds from the event are used to raise money for a worthy goal; the Valentine’s Day event is one of many yearly fundraisers the auxiliary sponsors to raise money for its annual Christmas Toys and Santa party — a goodwill outreach effort to provide a free meal and gifts to those less fortunate in the local community.

On Sunday, Dec. 19, the auxiliary hosted its annual gifting party, assisted by the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. More than 175 parents and children were fed a delicious meal prepared by the kitchen staff of Post 127 that included traditional holiday favorites. Ninety children from infants to 14-year-olds came to visit with Santa and were allowed to pick out a gift.

The auxiliary is already preparing for its 2022 Christmas event with the upcoming Valentine’s Day dance and more fundraisers to follow. At their last Valentine’s Day dance in 2019, they raised $900, and organizers hope to exceed that amount in 2022. The auxiliary plans to purchase even more gifts for next December through this and other fundraising efforts throughout the year, as well as donations received from Sons of the American Legion, Legion Riders and other individuals.

Auxiliary president Gail Ramey encourages those who want to know more about the benevolent work the group is doing to follow their activities on Facebook throughout the year at facebook.com/Post127SugarHill.

The dance starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, and the American Legion is at 6196 Suwanee Dam Road in Sugar Hill.
