Scholarships for golf are highly competitive, especially among southern colleges due to year-round playing conditions. So to say that a high school senior earned a scholarship for golf is not easy, is an understatement. One local young man has done just that. Buford High School senior, Wes Mitchell, who is the son of Brad and Natalie Mitchell, has earned a golf scholarship to Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Georgia. Brewton-Parker belongs to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes and competes in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Head coach for the BHS golf team, Justin Johnson, is incredibly proud of Wes. Wes is a four year player on the golf team. He has been a part of two state tournament teams that finished 14th in 2015 and 12th in 2016 in the state.
When asked his thoughts on Mitchell as an athlete and teammate, Coach Johnson was quick to say, “Wes is a tremendous asset to our program. He is a young man that cares deeply about our program, his teammates, and has a desire to be his absolute best every time he steps foot on the golf course.”
Wes is a prime example of a young man who put the hard work in to become successful. Coach Johnson stated that when Wes came to him as a 9th grader, he was new to the sport and struggled. Now four years later, Wes has earned a golf scholarship.
“To see how far he has improved in his game and his ability to put a solid round together is a testament to the countless hours he has spent over the past 4 years on the range, practice greens, and on the golf course itself.” said Coach Johnson.
Best wishes to Wes Mitchell as he begins a new chapter in his life at Brewton-Parker College in the Fall.
