Going into the GHSA State Traditional Championships held in Macon February 8-10, 2018, the Wolves had high expectations. They had thirteen wrestlers out of fourteen advance to State from their Sectionals meet. After the first day of competition, Buford had nine members advance to the semifinals of which eight made it to the finals.
At the finals, Buford had some tough matches but all eight managed to place in the top 5 or higher in their respective weight classes. Three BHS wrestlers won their weight class to become state champions. Sophomores Nick Stonecheck (132) and Charlie Darracott (145) clinched their second straight state championship titles while Senior Tristan Bozoian (182) claimed his first state title.
Logan Ashton, Nick Cambria, Kyle McCullough, Blaine Bergey, and Cooper Roberts all came in 2nd place in the finals. They put up a good fight with three out of the five matches having been lost by only one point while another was decided by two points. Billy Barber fought his way to 5th place after going through the consolation bracket.
These finishes from Buford were enough to win the Wolves their 2nd straight Class AAAAA State Traditional Title on February 10th in Macon in only head coach Tom Beuglas’ second year at Buford. The Wolves will loose six seniors for next year’s team but plenty of veterans will return for next year’s team including Logan Ashton, Blaine Bergey, Nick Stonecheck, Charlie Darracott, Nick Cambria, Quentin Skinner, and Trey Smith. Looks like Buford Wrestling has a bright future ahead.
