BUFORD — Authorities who have been searching the waters of Lake Lanier near Harbor Landing near Buford for the body of a missing man who went under while swimming recovered his body on Tuesday, July 14.
On Saturday, July 11, 2020, Hall County 911 received a call at 3:58 p.m. about a man who dove off of a pontoon boat to go swimming and never resurfaced. This occurred in the waters near Harbor Landing off of Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford.
Authorities have searched the waters daily since around 4 p.m. on Saturday for the body of Bentley Nwgbara, age 28 of Stone Mountain.
On Tuesday, authorities began searching again at 6 a.m. This time they would locate the body of Nwgbara after it resurfaced within the search area after 10:30 a.m.
According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the terrain on the bottom of the lake in the search area was on a steep incline and is covered in fallen and standing trees. This made the search extremely difficult for search crews.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assisted in the search efforts.
The body was released to the Hall County Coroner’s Office.
