BUFORD, GA – On Thursday evening, Jan. 10, the bridge that carries Thompson Mill Road over Interstate 985 (I-985) will close to traffic for up to 21 days.
This closure will allow repairs to the bridge’s substructure that was damaged by an over-height load. Thompson Mill Rd. drivers will be detoured by way of State Route 13 (Atlanta Hwy).
I-985 southbound traffic will also be affected by these repairs as both lanes will be closed Friday and Saturday nights between SR 20 and SR 347.

- Saturday, Jan. 12 9 p.m.- 7 a.m. Sunday Jan.13
During this closure traffic on I-985 southbound will be detoured by way of SR 347, SR 13, and SR 20. Drivers will see electronic message boards indicating they must exit the interstate.
For the daytime hours, I-985 southbound will be open but restricted to one lane on Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan 13 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
After the initial weekend of work, nightly lane closures for the interstate will be allowed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
L.C. Whitford of Alpharetta, Georgia will be completing the repairs of the bridge.
Drivers are advised to know before they go and use their favorite wayfinding app to avoid this area during the weekend of January 11.
