Brightside Cafe opens in Buford this September. The cafe will run out of 554 W. Main Street Building G Buford, GA 30518, which is currently going through renovations.

The cafe aims to provide more jobs in the community for people with disabilities while “serving a cup of joy” to all patrons.

Jennifer Elinburg has been teaching special education for over 20 years.

“I know that there’s a huge need for businesses like this,” Elinburg said. “To be able to provide a place for people with special needs to feel success, and you know, a part of their community.”

The cafe originally had the intention of running out of the BE Sports Training facility, where Elinburg and Carrie Walton are partners, but it soon turned into something bigger.

The pair took inspiration from businesses such as Special Kneads and Treats in Lawrenceville and Bitty and Beau’s Coffee in Athens.

“We’ve been in Buford all of our lives, so this is home for us,” Elinburg said. “Which is why we wanted to do it in town.”

Brightside Cafe aims to accommodate each employee by providing adaptive coffee machines, as well as being a cashless establishment.

Elinburg and Walton began renovating their space in February with the help of many members of the community.

“The response is way overwhelming,” Walton said.  “It’s just really cool watching the Buford community get really excited about this.”

Brightside Cafe runs a Brick by Brick fundraiser, where supporters can purchase an engraved brick to construct an outdoor patio. Additionally, there are plans to expand the business. On Sep. 10, the cafe will hold a fundraiser to support the creation of a pop-up concessions stand. The stand will travel to various locations, providing more opportunities for employees to work and engage with the community.

“These guys are turning your days around,” Elinburg said. “They’re positive and always looking on the bright side of life.”
