EAST HARTFORD, CONN. — The University of Virginia’s men’s lacrosse team defeated Maryland 17-16 on Monday, May 31, 2021, to capture their second straight NCAA National Championship. Maryland had been previously unbeaten this season.
This was Virginia’s seventh national championship in men’s lacrosse.
Mitchell Whalen, a BHS Class of 2019 alumnus was a part of Virginia’s second straight national title-winning team.
Whalen is now a sophomore at UVA and plays defense on the men’s lacrosse team. He has been dubbed as one of the fastest defensemen on the Cavaliers team.
Whalen was a key player for Buford’s lacrosse team earning numerous accolades during his time as a Wolf. His senior year, he was named the Gwinnett County Co-Defensive Player of the Year. In Whalen’s senior season, he picked up 75 ground balls, caused 32 turnovers and scored nine points for Buford.
