Buford High School’s baseball team secured a 1-0 victory over Etowah High School on Friday, April 7, giving head coach Stuart Chester his 700th career win.
Chester is the sixth prep coach in state history to record 700 or more wins.
During the game, part of the Battle for Bartow tournament held at the Lakepoint Sports Complex in Emerson, pitcher Damien Brown struck out 14 batters — a career high for the junior pitcher — in his first shutout of the season. Brown gave up only three hits and two walks.
In the fifth inning, Buford sophomore Cannon Goldin scored the Wolves’ sole run of the game with a one-out single to left field. After stealing second base, Goldin ran to third base on the next pitch. When Etowah’s catcher threw off target to the third baseman, Golden crossed home plate. to put the Wolves up by a single run.
Offensive standouts for Buford were freshman Bubba Coleman, who went 2-for-3; senior Drew Avant, who went 1-for3; and freshman Ayden Lockett, who also went 1-for-3.
With the win against Etowah, the Wolves improve their season record to 12-12 and 7-4 in Region AAAAAAA Area 8. The team is tied for first place in the region with Dacula.
