The Board approved three pay requests for the new BHS funded by SPLOST V. Those were to Charles Black Construction for $1,334,914.00 and $47,925.00, as well as, to Breaux & Associates for $12,946.41. A pay request for re-roofing the old BHS/new BMS was approved to pay Charles Black Construction $329,162.00. Pay requests for the new BHS funded by SPLOST V were approved for wrestling room pads ($23,915.76), whirlpools for athletic building ($25,800.00), hurt hut ($35,730.76), office furniture and trophy cases ($185,517.33). A pay request for new BHS door access control and door security was approved using the funding they received by a safety grant. This system is a badging system for staff to access the campus instead of traditional keys. The cost for this system is $18,191.18. New rugs were approved for Buford Academy.
Numerous field trip requests, fundraiser requests, and community service projects were approved. The FY20 Budget was approved. The budget increased by over $5 million and it includes raises to all employees. The approved budget is $52,169,000.00. The FY20 student Code of Conduct was approved. It contained no changes over last year’s Code of Conduct. The Board voted to approve an annual fee of $2,400.00 for a Nutrition Department Digital Menu System. This system will display the school menu on televisions throughout the campuses. The employee childcare which has not seen a rate increase in quite some time will increase by $3 a week which will be $15 a week per child. Staff finished up their 2018-2019 Local School Board Governance Annual Training.
Dr. Downs announced that the three school resource officers were sworn in last week. Chief Mindy Beyreuther swore in Officers Dieffenbacher, Garcia, and McKinley. Each officer was a former Gwinnett County police officer. They are currently undergoing training.
Mrs. Melanie Reed, Assistant Superintendent presented Interim Superintendent Mrs. Joy Davis a gift from the school system in appreciation for her leading the system for nine months this past school year. This meeting was the last school board meeting that Mrs. Joy Davis would be there in an official capacity. Mr. Beard said that Mrs. Davis would be on hand for the new high school ribbon cutting. Several school system staff gave heartfelt speeches thanking her for her impact on them and the community.
With no comments or concerns from the audience, Chairman Beard adjourned the June meeting of the Buford Board of Education. The next Board of Education meeting is on July 22, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Central Office on Sawnee Avenue in Buford.
