November 12, 2018 – School Board Chairman Phillip Beard called the November meeting for the Buford City School System Board of Education meeting to order.  After the Pledge of Allegiance and the approval of the agenda was complete, staff and students from BHS presented their Farm to Table Project to the Board.

 

Interim Superintendent Mrs. Joy Davis went over the nine items on the Facilities Report.  The first three items that were approved together were two pay requests for the new BHS to Charles Black Construction ($1,597,747 – SPLOST V), Breaux & Associates ($46,796.92 – SPLOST V) and for the new BHS Performing Arts Center to Charles Black Construction ($448,221 – SPLOST V).  A bid for repainting the fence at Buford Academy for $1,135 was approved (M & O). The best bid for furniture for the new BHS was approved for $1,160,831. Additional sound system equipment for new BHS was approved for $44,726.47. Three construction change directives for the new BHS were approved that resulted in total credits of $48,886.

 

A total of four field trip requests and two fundraiser requests were approved.  Revisions to PTO bylaws for BES, BA, and BMS were approved. It was announced that Stuff the Bus, the annual toy drive for BCSS students would begin soon (11/27 – BES, 11/28 – BA, 11/29 – BMS, 11/30 – BHS).

 

Director of Curriculum, Dr. Amy Chafin went over the school system’s 2018 results for the Georgia College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI).

    Buford Elementary School – 96        State Elementary School Average – 77.8

    Buford Academy – 92.6            State Elementary School Average – 77.8

    Buford Middle School – 93.4            State Middle School Average – 76.2

    Buford High School – 89            State High School Average – 75.3

    BCSS District (As a whole) – 91.7        State System Wide Average – 76.6

 

Buford Schools received “The Golden Radish Award for Farm to School Accomplishments” at the bronze level.  This recognizes the schools’ efforts to bring local produce to the schools and promote global sustainability.  Lacrecia Smith, Director for Diversity and Inclusion Program informed the Board that she had met with a group of BHS students to do exercises that promote diversity and inclusion.  BES and BA staff will undergo diversity and inclusion training this week and BMS will train the week after Thanksgiving break. The deadline for applications to serve on the Diversity and Inclusion Council for parents and adults in the community is Friday, November 16th.  Application is available at http://www.bufordcityschools.org/diversity-and-inclusion-council-application/.

 

Vice Chair of the Superintendent Candidate Search Committee, Sue Morris told the Board that the first round deadline for applicants for the position of BCSS Superintendent would end Thursday.  So far they have received 81 applications. The committee will meet on Friday to go through the applications they have received thus far. Total BCSS enrollment is 4,893.

 

The next Buford Board of Education Meeting will be December 10, 2018 at 12 p.m. at the Buford City Schools Central Office located at 2500 Sawnee Avenue, Buford.  Meeting is open to the public.
