Meet Daira Compean-Santos, a seventh grader at Buford Middle School. Daira has been selected as the Student of the Week for Buford City Schools for her hard work, academic success, kindness and bright future.
Daira was born in Lawrenceville but was raised in Buford. She started attending Buford City Schools as a kindergarten student at Buford Elementary School. She is the daughter of Abel Compean and Adelfa Santos. Daira has three older siblings, Liz Santos, 25, Navor Mata, 23, and Adiel Mata, 18. She also has a younger sister, Yarisbel Compean-Santos, 10, who is in the fifth grade at Buford Senior Academy.
Accelerated math is Daira’s favorite subject she is currently taking. She said she has really enjoyed her family and consumer science classes as they have taught her skills she needs in her day to day life. Learning about fashion design, interior design and her connection to her family were other things she said she enjoyed about family and consumer science class.
Daira has seventh grade language arts, physical education, accelerated math, life science, social studies and computer science this semester. Daira is said to be an exemplary student who earns mostly As and Bs and who tries hard to improve in areas she feels she didn’t perform so well in.
“Daira is an extremely hard worker, exemplary student citizen and always prepared for learning,” said Marcia Barnes, Daira’s sixth grade language arts teacher. “We love how Daira uses her agenda every day to write assignments from each subject area which assists her organization and preparedness for school. She is a special young girl and I am confident she is on a path to great accomplishments in her life!”
Daira’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Jackie Corley, who teaches her seventh grade social studies class.
“She’s so nice and she always helps the whole class,” Daira said. “We had a project a few days ago and she answered all of my questions and she really explains things when me or my classmates didn’t get it.”
When asked one thing that she has learned by attending Buford City Schools, Daira replied, “To never be afraid to learn new stuff and try new stuff.”
Daira has applied to be on the student leadership council at BMS and should find out within the next week or two if she was selected. She wants to be on the council because she has a desire to help other students, lead her peers and make her school a better place.
Daira is looking forward to attending high school and wants to work hard to earn a college scholarship. Daira’s dream is to become an architect, where she can design buildings from start to finish, including having a hand in the interior design of the building. As of right now, she wishes to pursue that degree at Pennsylvania State based off a recommendation from her sister.
When she is not busy with school and pursuing her dreams, Daira can be found participating in the youth group at Oakwood Baptist Church. She and her fellow youth group members volunteer to teach mini Bible stories to the 4- and 5-year-olds, as well as take them outside to play.
Daira enjoys babysitting her niece and nephew with the help of her brother Adiel on the weekends. Her younger sister Yarisbel loves art and Daira joins in on the artwork as they use colored pencils and markers to create masterpieces. Helping her sister with her homework is also another way Daira spends her free time.
When she wishes to relax, Daira can be found watching Netflix and the Baby-Sitters Club series. She also unwinds by listening to country and pop music.
Daira is a well rounded young lady with future dreams and aspirations. She is a loving sister and a helpful student. She exemplifies what a Buford Wolf is supposed to be.
