Meet Miriam Lowery, a senior at Buford High School. Miriam was born in Oxford, Mississippi, to Jenna and Glenn Lowery and moved to Atoka, Tennessee, when she was 2 years old. Miriam was raised in this small town until her family finally made the move to Buford during the summer of 2015. Miriam started at Buford in the seventh grade.
“It was a difficult transition moving in middle school, but Buford has such a close knit community that I felt very welcomed,” Miriam said.
Ranked within the top 10 of her class, Miriam has demonstrated her hard work academically at Buford High School. Throughout her four years at BHS, Miriam has taken 10 AP classes and has held an unweighted 4.0 GPA. When asked about her favorite subject, Miriam said, “My favorite subject has always been math. I love problem solving because I have a very logical mindset and the ability to come up with creative solutions.”
However, Miriam’s favorite class throughout high school was AP chemistry. Miriam said AP chemistry was challenging yet intriguing because it enabled her to study what she could not see. AP chem teacher, Ms. Lisa Cole, is Miriam’s favorite teacher.
“Ms. Cole is my favorite teacher because she is so committed to her students,” Miriam said. “She pushed me to be the best student I could be and inspired me to achieve great things.”
Alongside her remarkable execution inside the classroom, Miriam additionally stands apart as both an athlete and a functioning individual from the student body. Averaging eight to 10 hours every week, Miriam represents BHS athletics by running on the varsity cross country team and competing on the varsity soccer team. However, Miriam is not only athletic and intelligent, but she participates in many school extracurriculars. Miriam has been in the Buford Chamber Chorus for two years, Beta Club for three years, and the National Honor Society for two years.
Arguably her most impressive extracurricular, Miriam has been a part of the National Art Honor Society for two years and is able to compete her extraordinary art in high-end competitions.
“One of my art pieces was recognized at the 2020 All State Art Symposium at Columbus State University,” she said. “I also had artwork featured in the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, the North Gwinnett Kiwanis Club Art Show and the Buford City Schools Art Show.”
In her free time, Miriam enjoys creating art, reading, spending time outdoors and hanging out with friends and family.
After high school, Miriam plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology where she will be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in architectural design and a master’s in architecture. Her love for art and design has inspired her to continue this study throughout college.
“I really enjoy art and math, so a major in architectural design would be ideal because it is a combination of both” Miriam said. “I also think it would be really cool to be able to design pieces so much larger than the art I create now.”
Beyond doubt, Miriam Lowery is an extraordinary student both inside and outside the classroom. Miriam is the ideal image of a Buford Wolf — intelligent, hard working and dependable. Miriam is going to achieve greatness in life, and as a Buford graduate, we will proudly claim her.
