Several students from the Buford City School System brought home awards from the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Georgia State Leadership Conference in Athens, which was held from March 17 through 19.
The FCCLA State Leadership Conference is an annual event that serves as a platform for chapters to highlight their achievements and compete in various categories. Buford stood out for its exceptional performances throughout the year.
Buford High School student Nathan Mixon and Buford Middle School students Finley Wood and Ella Kaitlin Fisher all placed second in the Digital Delish event, which recognizes participants who demonstrate their ability to use knowledge and skills to video a food demonstration with a science spin.
Buford Middle School student Janvi Kothari received the esteemed Statesman Award (top 10%) in an individual event that recognizes members for their knowledge of state and national FCCLA.
Five students from Buford High School won Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events this year. These events offer a platform for students to showcase their knowledge, skills and abilities either individually or as a team to identify issues related to families, careers or communities, conduct thorough research and develop projects to advocate for positive change.
Ryan Mackenzie and Sophia Bernethy brought home gold for Nutrition and Wellness Level 2. Three students won silver — Alana Thomas for Sports Nutrition Level 3, Morgan Bateast in the Level 2 Sustainability Challenge and Mary Ella Davis for Level 2 Sustainability Challenge.
Jude Hadley placed at the bronze level in Sports Nutrition Level 2.
Jennifer Lopez and Margaret Beshiri serve as FCCLA advisors for Buford High School students and Kristina Hesson at BMS. The club focuses on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner and community leader as members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and career preparation.
