The new GHSA classification placements were released for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Buford, Dacula and Central Gwinnett will move to Class AAAAAAA from Class AAAAAA starting next fall. Gainesville will fall from Class AAAAAAA to Class AAAAAA while Lanier will remain in Class AAAAAA.
The GHSA recently voted to increase the out-of-district multiplier from 2.0 to 3.0 which means any student that is not from the district the school is zoned for must count as three students instead of one.
Buford’s enrollment number is 1,784 of which 360 students are considered out-of-district so they have the 3.0 multiplier applied to them. The GHSA has figured that Buford’s adjusted enrollment number is 2,504 which barely bumps Buford into Class AAAAAAA.
Schools have a chance to appeal the new classification placements. The deadline for a school to appeal the decision is 11 a.m. on Nov. 9, 2021.
