Buford High School Literary Team wins state championship

The Buford High School Literary Team was crowned the 2025 Literary State Champion for Georgia High School Association’s Class 6A. Buford was awarded 49 team points, 22 points higher than its closest competitor, Denmark High School in Forsyth County.

The state competition for Class 6A was held March 15 at Buford, where 12 BHS students place in the top three in their respective competitions:

  • Ava Jones: 1st place in Extemporaneous Speaking — Domestic
  • Wesley Culbertson: 1st place inExtemporaneous Speaking — International
  • Christopher Rischar: 1st place inLiterary Interpretation — Solo Dramatic
  • Quinton Hallen and Sophia Whyte: 1st place in Literary Interpretation — Duo
  • Vincenzo Fuoco: 1st place in Boys Solo
  • Samuel Jennings, Gavin Childers, Vincenzo Fuoco amd James Coltrin: 1st place in Quartet
  • Iyanu Banks: 2nd place in Girls Solo
  • Eva Cochran: 3rd place in Essay — Literary Analysis

Buford’s team has a history of winning state Literary competitions. Buford was Literary State Champion in 2024 in 7A, in 2022 and 2021 in 6A, from 2017 through 2019 in 5A, in 2015 and 2016 in Class AAAA, in 2013 and 2014 in Class AAA, from 2009 through 2012 in Class AA, and in 2005 and 2007 in Class AA. Buford also won in Class A in 1980 and 1985 and in its respective class in 1976. Buford tied with Oak Mountain Academy in 1982.

Literary coaches for Buford are Leila Bowman, Taylor Greer, Amy Lister, Makimsey Morris and Bethany Phillips.
