Meet Buford High School senior, Lizbeth Martinez. Lizbeth is what people around the Buford School System would call a “lifetimer”. A “lifetimer” is any Buford senior who has completed their entire K-12 career at Buford City Schools. She is a very active student at BHS where she juggles a very strenuous course load and extracurricular calendar.
Mr. Tim Harris, Buford High School English Department Chair said, “Lizbeth is a quiet scholar, someone who continually strives for and achieves excellence. Lizbeth also challenges herself with rigorous academic work; this year she is enrolled in AP classes in all four academic disciplines (English Literature, Calculus, Biology, and Government).” Lizbeth is part of the National Honor Society.
“In addition to her academic successes, Lizbeth is also a vital member of our arts programs, participating in our marching band and dance programs,” added Mr. Harris.
Since her sophomore year, she has been part of the BHS Color Guard. She credits Color Guard with breaking her out of her shell. Lizbeth had parts in the BHS Dance Show Diva that took place recently at the Fine Arts Center. She had dance numbers during the songs “Get the party started” and “Listen to your heart”.
Participating in Key Club allows Lizbeth to give back to her community through the various community service projects they do each year. Another way she gives back to her community is through her work with the Hope Club. Hope Club is focused on helping minorities connect to their community and assist them on their path to a brighter future including college. Lizbeth serves as the Vice President of the BHS Hope Club. Even with all of the strenuous classes and her various commitments, Lizbeth manages to maintain a 3.9 GPA.
Her favorite teacher at BHS she said without hesitation is Ms. Melissa Green who teaches her AP Biology class. Lizbeth also had Ms. Green in the 10th grade for chemistry. She said Ms. Green manages to connect what they learn in class to the real world. Ms. Green is very approachable. “She (Ms. Green) is a teacher you feel comfortable asking for assistance,” Lizbeth stated.
Although she is yet undecided on where she plans on attending college, she has narrowed her list of colleges to Berry, Oglethorpe, Dartmouth, UGA, and John Hopkins. Her love of science, biology, in particular, is what influenced her decision to one day become an anesthesiologist.
“I have wanted to be an anesthesiologist since I was in the fifth-grade. I find biology and how the human body works fascinating,” said Lizbeth.
In her free time, she loves to spend time with her parents and two sisters. She loves to bake cakes in particular and decorate them. Lizbeth’s current favorite T.V. show is the Netflix series, On My Block. Although she likes most music, her favorite is alternative rock with her favorite band being Panic at the Disco.
The future looks bright for this Buford “lifetimer”. Lizbeth’s caring nature, willingness to give back to her community and strong work ethic makes her a role model and a true Wolf.
