Buford shuts out Mill Creek in region opener

BUFORD, Ga. — Buford opened its Region 8-6A schedule with authority Thursday, August 21, defeating rival Mill Creek 12-0 in four innings at the Buford Softball Complex.

After a 90-minute weather delay, the Wolves came out aggressive at the plate, striking for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mill Creek pitchers struggled to find the zone, issuing nine walks over the course of the game, and Buford capitalized on nearly every opportunity.

By the third inning, the Wolves had built a 10-0 lead thanks to a pair of long balls. Senior Addie Rackley launched a two-run shot over left field, and junior Ella Pierce Hensley followed with a two-run homer of her own to put the game firmly out of reach.

Senior right-hander Caroline Stanton was dominant in the circle, striking out nine and allowing just one hit and one walk in four innings of work. Mill Creek’s lone baserunner never advanced past second, as Stanton and her defense cut down the threat with a pickoff to end the inning.

Buford ended the game in the bottom of the fourth when junior Olivia Nagel drove a two-run double deep into left field, scoring the final runs needed to invoke the run rule. Freshman LG Goldin also provided a spark, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

With the win, Buford improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Wolves will travel to Allatoona on Friday for a doubleheader against Campbell and River Ridge, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
