Senior Olivia Duncan and the Buford varsity softball team won a key region game against Mill Creek 11-6 on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Buford Softball Complex.
Duncan (5-0) pitched a complete seven-inning game for the Wolves, striking out eight and walking one, and she gave up six runs, five of which were earned.
Mill Creek struck first with a strong first inning scoring four runs. Buford would answer back in the bottom of the second and third innings with three runs scored in each. The Hawks attempted to mount a comeback, scoring one run in the top of the fourth inning, but it simply wasn’t enough. The Wolves would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, one in the fifth and two in the sixth inning. Mill Creek was able to score one additional run in the top of the seventh inning, but the Wolves would win the region contest 11-6.
Offensive standouts for Buford were junior Tavye Borders (3-for-4, double, two RBIs, two runs scored), sophomore Isabel Rettinger (3-for-4, one RBI, one run scored, one stolen base), junior Mackenzie Pickens (2-for-4, two doubles, three RBIs) and freshman Caroline Stanton (2-for-3, three runs scored).
Buford remains undefeated with an overall record of 9-0 and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAAAA.
The Wolves will play another region opponent, Central Gwinnett, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1,. at the Buford Softball Complex.
