Buford Swimmer Makes School History at State Championships

By Alicia Couch Payne

Caroline Irwin, a sophomore at Buford High School was marked early on to do great things for Buford’s swim program.  She started off in the summer swim leagues and trains at SwimAtlanta alongside many of the top swimmers in the area.

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Swimming and Diving State Championships are taking place this weekend at Georgia Tech’s Aquatic Center.  Caroline makes school history in the 4A-5A 50-yard freestyle race by bringing home the school’s first-ever swimming state championship title. Caroline placed first with a time of 23.79 beating out Chapel Hill’s Danielle Melilli.  She then turns around and comes in second place just behind Chamblee’s Jade Foelske in the 4A-5A 100-yard butterfly race.

Congratulations to Caroline Irwin for her state champion title!  Also, congratulations to Buford High School and their athletic department for their first-ever state swim championship title!  Go Wolves!
