In enemy territory, the Buford volleyball team emerged the victor over Lee County on Wednesday night in the GHSA Class AAAAAA state quarterfinals. Buford got off to a bit of a slow start losing the first set 26-28 but the Lady Wolves rebounded and took the next three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-20.
Buford (35-4) was led offensively by junior Ashley Sturzoiu who had 15 kills against Lee County (25-18). Seniors Mikayla Hayden and Camryn Carlton each contributed to Buford’s win with 12 kills each. Junior Polly Cummings had a strong performance with 38 assists. Leading the Buford defense was junior Dylan Cummings.
The Lady Wolves will travel to the Lakepoint Sports complex in Cartersville to play Pope in the GHSA Class AAAAAA state semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 30. The exact start time is to be determined.
Pope (39-7) is ranked third in Class AAAAAA just behind Buford who is second. Buford defeated Pope in the GHSA Class AAAAAA State Championship game last year with scores of 25-16, 19-25, 25-13, 25-21.
