BUFORD — Buford’s volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the young season this week, picking up three straight-set victories that included a statement win over returning state finalist North Cobb.
The Wolves opened their busy stretch on Tuesday with a road trip to Wesleyan, where they came away with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 sweep. Junior standout Clara Briley powered the offense with 16 kills and 12 digs, while setter Olivia Hayden spread the ball around with 16 assists to go along with eight digs and four kills.
Two days later, Buford faced its toughest test of the season so far. North Cobb, which advanced to last year’s Class 7A state championship match and entered this season as one of the most respected programs in Georgia, came into Buford on Thursday night. The Wolves, however, showed poise against the perennial powerhouse, rolling to a 25-16, 25-19 victory.
Briley was once again at the center of Buford’s attack, finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs in the signature win. Morgan Sanders added nine kills and four blocks, providing a strong presence at the net, while Hayden kept the offense clicking with crisp passing.
Buford capped off the night with another sweep, this time over Cherokee Bluff. The Wolves pulled away in the opening set for a 25-14 win and held off a late rally from the Bears in the second set to close out a 25-22 victory. Briley continued her steady play with 12 kills, and libero Reagan Callender led the defense with seven digs. Hayden tallied 31 assists across the two Thursday matches.
With the wins, Buford not only remained undefeated but also proved it can handle both tough opponents and quick turnarounds. The Wolves have now dropped only one set through their first five matches of the season, and their victory over North Cobb serves notice that they are ready to contend with the state’s elite once again.
