The Buford High School wrestling team crushed its competition in the GHSA AAAAAA dual wrestling prelims on Saturday, Jan. 15.
The Wolves faced off against Kennesaw Mountain High School in the first round of the duals, securing an 81-0 shutout to progress to round two.
Next, Buford wrestling went head-to-head with South Effingham High School, whom they defeated with a comfortable score of 66-6.
“All of our kids wrestled well as we only lost one match on the day,” said Buford wrestling head coach Tom Beuglas — he highlighted Rylan Ibold (106), Maddox McArthur (120) and Drew Gorman (126) as top performers from the duals.
“We are looking forward to competing against the other top teams in the state this weekend,” Beuglas added. “As long as we are all healthy and have everyone in the lineup, we should be very competitive.”
Lanier High School’s wrestling team was also present at the prelim duals but was knocked out in the first round after a hard-fought 54-27 defeat to Pope High School.
North Gwinnett High School wrestling competed in the AAAAAAA prelim duals, but they were also eliminated in the first round after suffering a 48-19 loss to West Forsyth.
Buford’s two prelim dual victories mean the Wolves will progress to the GHSA AAAAAA state duals on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Brunswick High School.
