Buford’s Joey Bart makes MLB debut for Giants Thursday night

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — Former Buford High School catcher, Joey Bart made his major league debut Thursday night versus the Los Angeles Angels. Bart was drafted second in the 2018 MLB draft by the Giants right after Auburn’s Casey Mize went No. 1 to the Detroit Tigers.

Bart who spent his college days at Georgia Tech called his own pitches which is rare in baseball. He spent the last two years in the minors in AA where he hit 29 home runs in 130 games and had a slugging percentage of .532. Bart is ranked the No. 15 overall prospect by MLB.

“He’s a guy that leads and commands the room,” said baseball analyst Harold Reynolds. “I am looking forward to watching him play.”

Bart’s first major league hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning when he hit a double down the left-field line off of former Braves ace Julio Teheran.

Bart will catch for the Giants since starting All-Star Buster Posey opted out of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Bart is listed at 6-foot-2, 238 lbs and he should help a struggling Giants team ranked in the bottom for batting average, home runs, and wins under first-year manager Gabe Kapler.
