The Players Guild at Sugar Hill put on a fantastic performance of Bullets and Badges, a play that takes you back in time to relive the era of old time Crime Radio, before television was invented. Complete with handmade sound effects, time appropriate costumes, and a lively cast that made the audience feel as if they had slipped back into the 1940s. Actual crime radio shows from the past were used in the play, stories such as Dick Tracy and Dragnet captured the audience’s attention.
The cast of Bullets and Badges featured a mixture of men and women who were veterans to theater along with those who were making their first time debut, although the audience could not tell the difference. Side antics between the cast members kept things lively and humorous while the “cops and robbers” stories kept folks on their edge of their seats.
Director, Alan Hyma, got the idea for making the old time radio play about twelve years ago when he came across a box of old cassette tapes at a garage sale and has since been directing old time radio plays. This is the Players Guild at Sugar Hill’s 4th annual radio show and the programs have been so successful that they have created WSHG, a fictitious radio station for Sugar Hill that is styled in “Old Time Radio” where listeners can tune in and hear classic radio shows from the past.
Bullets and Badges will be the final production hosted at Sugar Hill City Hall. The Eagle Theatre, located next to City Hall, will soon be complete, becoming the new home of the Players Guild. The Players Guild hosts open auditions for their productions. To find out about upcoming auditions, play dates and times, as well as ticket information can be found on the Players Guild website at www.pgatsh.com.
