According to the noon report on Thursday from the Georgia Department of Public Health, the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Gwinnett County is now 603. That is an increase of 38 since the noon report on Wednesday. The number of deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus increased by two in 24 hours to 17 in the county. Gwinnett is the fifth hardest-hit county in the state with COVID-19.
Fulton still leads the state with 1,276 cases. Dougherty County, which is a more rural county than any of the other counties in the top five counties with the most positive COVID-19 cases is second with 1,020 cases. They lead the state in the number of deaths attributed to the virus with 62. Fulton trails with 45 deaths from the coronavirus. Dekalb is third with 742 and Cobb is fourth with 629 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. Other hard-hit or nearby counties are Clayton with 297, Hall has 238, Forsyth now has 104, Barrow reports 46, and Jackson is up by one with 24.
Overall, there are 10,566 Georgians who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the state thus far. Of that number, 2,159 people have been hospitalized from the virus. The current rate of death attributed to COVID-19 is 3.59% or 379 deaths reported.
Females still lead males with 54% of the total number of cases. Males are 44% of the total and the remaining 2% are unknown. The 18-59 group still leads with 60%, the over 60 group takes up 35%, the under 18 group remains 1%, and the unknown group takes up the last 4%.
Nationwide, the CDC is reporting that 427,460 Americans are infected with COVID-19. They report that 14,696 people have now succumbed to the virus in the U.S. New York continues to lead the nation for the most cases with 149,316. New Jersey is second with 47,437, Michigan is third with 20,346 cases, Louisiana is fourth with 17,030 positive cases, and California rounds out the top five with 16,957.
The World Health Organization reports that 1,436,198 people worldwide have contracted the novel coronavirus. The death toll is now 85,522 deaths worldwide. While the United States leads the world in the total number of positive COVID-19 cases, Italy still leads with the most deaths with 17,669 Italians who have perished from the virus.
