The National Education Association Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.
At Buford Academy, students were allowed to join in the celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday by dressing up as their favorite book character. Many characters were spotted from Things 1 and 2 to Hogwarts students to Pinkalicious. Many teachers joined in on the fun by dressing up as well.
Buford Elementary celebrated the entire week by having a different theme each day including wild socks day, crazy hat day, and character day. BES closed out the week by having a pep rally for the upcoming RunRaiser fundraiser. Also on Friday, the kindergarten classes had special guests from Buford High School stop by.
Buford High School seniors who have gone to Buford City Schools from Kindergarten through 12th are referred to as “Life Timers”. It’s a tradition that the Life Timers return to Buford Elementary on the annual Read Across America Day to give back to the kindergartners by reading to them. Several Life Timers were able to read to their former kindergarten teacher’s current class like Cameron Archer. His kindergarten year was spent with Mrs. Cochran who is still helping to shape young minds as a Kindergarten teacher at BES.
This year’s Read Across America Day/Dr. Seuss’s 114th Birthday Celebration was a huge success at Buford. Kids and staff alike had a blast taking part in this nationwide campaign.
