Former Buford quarterback and established college coach Montgomery VanGorder is taking his talents northward.
VanGorder, who worked his way up the organizational ladder with the University of Georgia, is headed to coach with the Philadelphia Eagles. He will be an offensive assistant, as the North Gwinnett Voice confirmed an original report by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.
VanGorder starred under the Tom Riden Stadium lights in a two-quarterback system along with signal caller Taylor Mitchell. It not only allowed him to blossom in his playing career to earn college spots at Notre Dame and Youngstown State, but also allowed him to gain a vantage point advantageous for the coaching profession.
After playing, VanGorder returned to his backyard to start as a quality control coach for Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart. Eventually, after working with Buster Faulkner (now the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech) and Mike Bobo, VanGorder worked his way up into a role as assistant quarterbacks coach. He played a major on-field role in grooming the talents of Carson Beck and Gunner Stockton during the 2024 season, especially once Beck went down with injury.
VanGorder also won consecutive national championships with Georgia, against Alabama and TCU, respectively.
Now, he gets his chance on the big stage. VanGorder arrived in Philadelphia and hit the ground running. He reunites with six of his former Georgia mentees who are now in the National Football League.
VanGorder, son of former acclaimed defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, has coaching rushing through his bloodlines. The profession was never a doubt, and now he pursues it at the highest level.
He has made an impact at every level prior, though, from the days at Buford High School to now.
“Appreciate you Gummy,” Dan Puglisi, Georgia quarterback Ryan Puglisi’s father, wrote on Facebook. “Thank you for everything!”
