Buford softball returned to the grind of a long season Thursday. The Wolves traveled to River Ridge and pulled out a convincing 9-2 win over a quality opponent after a rocky first inning.
Ace pitcher Caroline Stanton, who opened her junior season, allowed two runs, two hits and two walks in the opening frame. She retired the next 21 batters in order.
.Offensively, sophomore Ella Pierce Hensley and junior Addie Rackley each hit a home run. Senior Izzy Rettiger had two hits and recorded four stolen bases. Hensley finished with a hit in each of her two at-bats as she replaced Gabby Pierre.
“I told the girls as we got off of the bus, ‘We aren’t going to win it today and we aren’t going to lose it today,'” fourth-year head coach Trent Adams said. “It’s a game and a chance for us to improve. Hopefully we will peak at the right time.”
Buford, after winning its season opener, travels to Walnut Grove next Tuesday, Aug. 13. The Wolves their home slate against Cambridge on Aug. 19.
Buford notched its 40th-consecutive victory.
Adams spoke with the North Gwinnett Voice for four quick questions to go beyond the recaps and stat lines.
Q: What does Caroline Stanton’s performance say about her resiliency?
A: I think it was a bit of first-game nerves and jitters. We misplayed a bunt that went into the outfield, and I thought the umpire had a bit of a tight zone to start. She settled in. That’s who she is. She’s got that pitcher’s mentality.
Q: We mentioned Ella Pierce Hensley as a player to watch before the season started. What has led the young player to this moment?
A: She did a really nice job coming off of the bench with the home run and hit to left. She’s a worker. She’s gotten stronger for sure. Throughout the year (as a freshman), I’d watch her in the weight room and she would flat-out get after it. It’s paying off, I’m really happy for her.
Q: With Addie Rackley being one of your star pitchers, does her offensive production surprise you?
A: No, no. She can swing it. Rack can swing it.
Q: What does it mean to make a statement to open the season?
A: It was good to get us back together and have umpires out there. We got past the nerves. We’re excited. We’re excited to get the season started. We’ll keep getting better as the season goes.
