A new speed zone enforcement camera has been installed at North Gwinnett Middle School in Sugar Hill.
The school is located at 170 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, and the camera went live Monday, Aug. 28. The camera is in operation only on days when school is in session. The speed limit when alert lights are flashing is 35 miles per hour from 8:35 to 9:35 a.m. and again from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. The speed limit when alert lights are not flashing is 45 miles per hour.
The installation is part of the Gwinnett County School Zone Safety Program that seeks to reduce the number of speed violations in school zones and promote student and staff safety. According to the program, statistics show locations with speed cameras have seen an approximately 50% reduction in the number of violations since the program started in November 2021.
Revenue generated from violations funds local law enforcement and public safety initiatives. The fee for the first violation will cost a driver $75 and subsequent violations are $125, with a $5 administrative fee added to each citation.
Two speed enforcement cameras are also set up at Lanier Middle School at 6482 Suwanee Dam Road in Sugar Hill on both Suwanee Dam Road and Buford Dam Road. The speed limit when alert lights are flashing is 25 miles per hour from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and again from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The speed limit when alert lights are not flashing is 35 miles per hour.
