Gwinnett County Public Schools plans to move forward with a pilot program for clear backpacks following the completion of a survey that gauged community opinion on the proposed safety measure.
“Following the recent school shooting at Apalachee High School, there was a strong call from the community for additional steps to protect students and staff in our schools,” GCPS states on its website. “In response, we began exploring further protective measures beyond our ongoing safety measures and the pilot programs already in place for this school year. This led to the distribution of a three-question poll to all GCPS students, families, and staff.”

Survey results showed most students, 87%, opposed a clear backpack requirement. Of the adults who responded, 50.7% opposed the safety measure, while 49.3% were in favor.
“Despite these mixed opinions, we know that safety remains a concern for many in our community,” GCPS stated on its website. “While a clear backpack requirement will not solve every safety issue, it is one more layer we can add to help ensure our schools remain safe and welcoming.”
The school system plans to release more information on the clear backpack pilot program in the coming weeks.
