The Gwinnett County Police Department has identified a woman accused of firing gunshots at a school bus transporting students, and she is facing multiple charges related to the Monday, May 9, incident.
Celeste Michele Saunders, 57, has been charged with four counts of cruelty to children in the first degree, five counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies and unauthorized discharge of a firearm near a public street. Saunders is accused of firing multiple gunshots at a Gwinnett County Public Schools bus transporting students bound for Riverside Elementary School. The incident took place in the area of Highland Gate Circle and Highland Gate Drive in Suwanee.
“There is no threat to our local community,” a news release stated. “Saunders lived in the neighborhood, and this was an isolated incident.”
According to police, the school bus driver, 56-year-old Patricia Rodriguez of Sugar Hill, sustained minor injuries from fragmented glass during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. All children were physically unharmed.
