Buford High School
Both Buford golf teams walked away as Area Champions on April 29. Standouts at Area for the girls were Kamryn Roberts, Natalie Cranney, and Toni Telenta. Area standouts for the boys were Jackson Buchanan and Nick Allison. Both of Buford’s golf teams will compete at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton on May 20-21 in the State AAAAA Championships.
Buford boys tennis postseason came to a halt on April 30 with a 1-3 loss to host Chamblee.
The Buford girls soccer team just barely missed advancing to the next round of the playoffs when Riverwood beat them at home 2-1 on May 1.
The Buford girls lacrosse team won their first-round playoff game against St. Pius with a score of 11-7 at the Buford Sports Complex last Thursday, May 2. The Lady Wolves will travel to Kell for the second round of playoffs. Buford boys lacrosse cruises to an easy win over Druid Hills on home turf. They defeated Druid Hills 17-2 in the opening round of state playoffs. The Wolves will face Pace Academy in the second round at home on Tuesday, May 7.
The Buford varsity baseball team had a doubleheader against Kell in Marietta on Thursday, May 2. The Wolves took game one with a score of 3-1 and also took game two 5-4. Buford moves on to face Ola on the road in the elite eight of the State AAAAAA Championship playoffs on Wednesday, May 8 for a doubleheader with the “if” game falling on May 9.
On May 3, Ola hosted the State Gymnastics Championships. Buford (108.05) came in third in the State A-AAAAA Championships behind North Oconee (113.8) and Denmark (108.55). In the individual all-around competition, the top-three gymnasts were very close in score with the top girl, Sarah Wilson of Denmark with 38.8 score, followed by Elena Arenas of North Oconee with a 38.55. Just behind Arenas was Buford’s Cyrena Whalen with a score of 38.075. Whalen took third on the uneven parallel bars followed by teammate Kelsey Shulman in fourth. On the balance beam, Whalen placed second and she placed fourth on the floor exercise.
On Saturday, May 4, Buford track and field teams competed in the Sectional meet at Union Grove. The girls were led by Kimberly Harris with her two first-place finishes in the 200 M and 400 M races and by Callie Snell’s first-place finish in the pole vault. Caroline Snell was not far behind her sister with a second-place finish in the pole vault and Trinity Price was not far behind Harris in the 400 M to finish second. For the boys, Jakarta Holley brought home the only first-place finish for the Wolves with his win in discus. The qualifiers from sectionals will travel to compete in the State AAAAA Championships in Carrollton on May 9-11.
North Gwinnett High School
Both North Gwinnett golf teams edged out their competition in the Area tournament at the Summit Chase Country Club in Snellville last Tuesday. They move on to the State Championships on May 20-21. The boys will play at Hamilton Mill while the girls will host at Chimney Oaks.
The North Gwinnett girls lacrosse team downs the number 2 team in the state. The Lady Bulldogs beat Lassiter 16-13 on the road in round one of the State 6A-7A tournament. Parker Nevels led North with five goals while Lana Puckett had 11 saves at the net. North travels to Roswell in round two. The North Gwinnett boys lacrosse team beat their guest Kennesaw Mountain last week with a score of 16-9 in the opening round of state playoffs. The Bulldogs will host Milton in the second round of playoffs.
On May 1, North Gwinnett girls soccer team hosted West Forsyth and beat them 3-1 in round two of the State AAAAAAA Championships. The Lady Bulldogs will face Camden County in the elite eight on May 7.
North Gwinnett varsity baseball takes the doubleheader on Wednesday night against Forsyth Central. They took game one with a 10-2 win and just got the win with an 8-6 score in game two. North Gwinnett will host Etowah in the elite eight of the State AAAAAAA Championship playoffs on Wednesday, May 8 for a doubleheader with the “if” game taking place on May 9.
On May 4 at McEachern High School, North Gwinnett Track and Field teams competed in the Sectional meet. Top State Championship qualifiers for North Gwinnett girls were Sierra Harrison with a first-place finish in the high jump, Kelsey Worthington with a three-way tie for first in the pole vault, and Hayley Moore in second for the shot put. The top finishers for the boys were Trisstan Weddington with a first-place finish in the long jump, Eugene Kim with a first-place finish in the shot put event, Tiray Lavender with second-place in the triple jump, Colin Wainright with a second-place finish in the 110 M hurdles and his second-place finish in the 300 M hurdles. North’s state qualifiers will compete at State on May 9-11 in Rome.
