During its April meeting, the Jackson EMC Foundation’s Board of Directors awarded grants to two organizations based in Suwanee.
The Jackson EMC Foundation is a nonprofit organization established to represent the members of Jackson EMC and allocate funds collected through Operation Round Up. Its mission is to distribute money collected to worthwhile, charitable purposes that will improve lives and address immediate needs within the counties where Jackson EMC provides electric service.
The foundation awarded $15,000 to PCOM Georgia in Suwanee to provide anatomy equipment and supplies for its science and math summer academy for rising 10th and 11th grade students in Gwinnett County Public Schools. PCOM Georgia is a private, not-for-profit institute of higher education for students pursuing health care professions.
An award of $7,500 was made to Tiny Stitches in Suwanee to provide materials and supplies for a network of volunteers to handcraft a 28- to 32-piece layette of clothing and blankets to keep an infant warm and dry for the first three months of life. The garments are donated to mothers in Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall and Jackson counties lacking the means to provide for their newborns.
The foundation also awarded grants to organizations serving Gwinnett County, including:
- $20,000 to Extra Special People in Watkinsville to provide an opportunity for special needs or critically ill children from low-income or financially distressed families in surrounding counties, including Gwinnett, to attend an eight-week camp.
- $20,000 to L.A.M.P. Ministries in Gainesville for its Community Youth and Children’s program that combines group and individual counseling, community activities and mentoring to provide high risk youth, including those in Gwinnett, with a positive alternative to gangs, drugs and other delinquent behaviors.
- $15,000 to University of North Georgia Foundation for its Steps to College Program, which provides summer high school courses for English learners throughout Jackson EMC’s service area, including Gwinnett County, to earn credit toward graduation.
- $10,000 to MUST Ministries for its summer lunch program, which provides breakfast and lunch to needy children in Gwinnett County five days per week for nine weeks.
- $5,000 to Bridge the Gap Ministries for its rental assistance program serving low-income and homeless families in Gwinnett.
- $5,000 to Foster Siblings Reunited (Camp to Belong) to enable children in the 10 counties Jackson EMC serves, including Gwinnett, to attend summer camp and Virtual Sibling Connection events.
