Local branches within the Gwinnett County Public Library will close throughout the month of April for renovations, a system official confirmed to The North Gwinnett Voice.
The Suwanee branch has been closed since April 8 for bathroom renovations, work on the HVAC units and roof repairs. The Hamilton Mill branch, on the border of Dacula and Buford, will close on April 22 to undergo bathroom renovations.
The repairs will take “several weeks,” according to library official Duffie Dixon, and the branches will be closed indefinitely.
“We’re actually very thankful that the county is undertaking these renovations,” said Dixon, the director of marketing and communications for the library system. “While we hate to inconvenience our customers, the renovated facilities will be much better situated to serve the rapidly growing community.”
Dixon added that the libraries are “thrilled” that the county is providing these renovations to allow for updated amenities.
Any customers will not be charged for any late fees during the days that the branches are closed if they checked out books before the closure. In addition, an extra week has been granted to return books to any branch, Dixon said. The book drops are unavailable at either of the closed branches.
The Gwinnett County Public Library system avoided having neighboring branches close. Those who normally visit the Suwanee or Hamilton Mill branch can use the Buford-Sugar Hill branch. That branch closed in November 2023 for bathroom renovations.
Before any branch closes, it posts signage several weeks ahead of time to let visitors know of a future closing.
“We have strived to come up with the most efficient schedule of closings possible,” Dixon said. “We have worked hard developing a schedule that does not close neighboring branches at the same time, so that a customer should not have to travel too far from their home branch to drop or pick up books at the next closest branch.”
