Local students advance to nationals after placing at FBLA State Leadership Conference

Students from Buford High School joined more than 4,000 of their peers at the Georgia Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference last month.

On March 22 and 23, 38 Buford students attended and competed at the conference, which was held at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. There, they showcased their skills through competitions, tests and leadership campaigns.

Gia Khang Quach placed first in computer problem solving, demonstrating a strong knowledge of operating systems, networks and hardware. Taylor Aycock placed fourth in hospitality and event management. Both students will advance to the nationals.

Three additional students placed in the top 10 statewide — Daniel Nikolaev, ninth in cybersecurity; Jack Leland, ninth in personal finance; and James Harrison Santana, 10th in accounting I.

Georgia FBLA members are given the opportunity to compete in nearly 100 different competitive events at the regional, state and national levels.  These events include objective tests, interviews, technical skills tests, written reports and performances.

This year marks Buford FBLA Co-President Jack Lelands’ fourth year participating.

“The skills I have learned give me confidence not only with business skills, but also the interpersonal skills necessary to be a good leader,” he said.

During the conference, attendees had the opportunity to network with professionals from across the state. They were able to share their successes and learn new ideas through workshops and exhibits. The competition at the state level showcased region winners.

According to its website, Georgia’s FBLA chapter is the largest in the nation with more than 25,000 members.

“It’s exciting to see that the state of Georgia is being handed over to strong, competent leaders in the near future,” Leland said.

The National Leadership Conference will be held from June 29 to July 2 in Orlando.
