The waters of Lake Lanier claimed the life of a 23-year-old male victim who drowned while swimming at Lanier Park in Gwinnett County on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Just after 3 p.m., game wardens with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were assisted by personnel with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in responding to a possible drowning at the park located off Lanier Park Road inj Buford. According to Mark McKinnon, public affairs officer with the Law Enforcement Division of the Georgia DNR, the male victim was swimming when he went under and did not resurface.
Using boat-mounted sonar, game wardens were able to locate the victim’s body in approximately 10 feet of water, and rescue swimmers with Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services handled the recovery.
The victim has been identified as Edgar Steven Cruz Martinez.
