Gwinnett County voters took to the polls on Tuesday to vote on the proposed expansion of MARTA into Gwinnett County. After all the votes from Tuesday and early/absentee voting were tallied up, a total of 91,921 votes were cast. Those in favor of the referendum totaled 41,985 votes or 45.68% while those who cast their vote against the referendum totaled 49,936 votes or 54.32%.
County officials were surprised that the numbers were not closer and claim that low voter turnout hurt the referendum’s chance to pass. While the referendum failed to pass this time, chances are this is not the last time that the residents of Gwinnett County will see this on a ballot.
