Mother charged after student fires gun in Meadowcreek Elementary restroom

GWINNETT COUNTY – A mother is facing reckless conduct charges after her 9-year-old child brought a handgun to Meadowcreek Elementary School and fired it inside a restroom, shattering a toilet.

The shooting occurred before the start of the school day. No one was injured.

Investigators say the student took the 9mm pistol from home. School staff discovered the damage Friday and later determined a firearm had been discharged. Officials also learned the student had allegedly made threats to bring the gun to school.

The student’s mother, Deevashea Webb, is charged with failing to properly secure the firearm.

Parents at the school expressed concern but relief that the restroom was empty at the time of the incident.

While Gwinnett County elementary schools currently do not use weapons detection systems, the district announced that unarmed security officers will now be placed on elementary campuses. These officers will monitor perimeters and ensure doors remain locked throughout the school day.
