The start of the 2022-2023 school year brings a new addition to Gwinnett County Public Schools — Seckinger High School welcomed its inaugural class of ninth grade students on Wednesday, Aug. 3, followed by 10th through 12th grade students attending in person on Thursday, Aug. 4.
Located at 3655 Sardis Church Road in Buford, the school anchors the Seckinger cluster, which includes Harmony, Ivy Creek and Patrick elementary schools, as well as Glenn C. Jones Middle.
At Seckinger — a “next-generation learning experience” — students will select an area of concentration for their high school studies within three broad areas — advanced science and technology, business and leadership, and art and design — or students can pursue a more traditional yet personalized course of study.
Seckinger will offer opportunities for students to participate in athletics, fine arts, extracurricular activities, student associations, leadership opportunities and service organizations.
Unique to Seckinger, which is a theme school, is an emphasis on artificial intelligence, or AI, within the area of advanced sciences and technology. Students will have an opportunity to explore AI based on their level of interest.
“All students — those who elect to focus on an area of concentration as well as those choosing a more traditional path — will have embedded AI learning and skill development throughout their coursework,” an announcement on the district’s website states. “These learning experiences will promote future-readiness skills like project management, design thinking, ethics in decision-making, and effective teamwork.”
The Seckinger campus, which has a capacity for 2,800 students, includes expanded technology and engineering labs; three lecture halls with adjoining labs and classroom space; collaboration rooms and spaces throughout the building; expanded art classrooms and a graphic design lab; band, orchestra, chorus rooms, and a MIDI lab; a theater and dance studio; and gymnasiums, athletic fields and a stadium.
