DACULA – The Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to a call about an overturned tanker truck on Braselton Highway and Hamilton Mill Road on Tuesday morning at 5:26 a.m. which is still ongoing.
Firefighters responded to the overturned fuel tanker truck at 5:34 a.m. forcing the closure of the intersection of Braselton Highway and Hamilton Mill Road in the unincorporated Dacula area. The accident was only the tanker trucker and no other motorists were involved.
The overturned tanker forced the closure of the intersection of Braselton Highway and Hamilton Mill Road. Firefighters evacuated nearby businesses including the Discovery Point Daycare, the B/P Station, and QT.
Fuel from the tanker has been leaking forcing firefighters to set up a 500-foot hot zone perimeter. Firefighters worked to determine the amount of fuel that entered a nearby storm drain. A representative from the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources has responded to the scene.
“Hazmat technicians are working to stop the leak and contain the runoff,” said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire PIO. “They are also making EPA/EPD notifications. Crews are monitoring gas readings and air quality in the area.”
Fire and police officials have set up a unified command post to better handle the situation.
The driver of the tanker truck had minor complaints and was evaluated by paramedics on the scene. He was later released from their care.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid this area as it is still ongoing.
