BUFORD — Anyone who has played softball or baseball in Buford have played at the Legion Fields on Sawnee Avenue. Walking through the complex is like a walk back in time. It has changed very little over the decades but the fields are getting a much-needed facelift.
The City of Buford is investing $11 million in renovating the Legion Fields, as well as, the high school’s softball and baseball fields. The project will include reconfiguring parking which over the years has become a bit of a problem with trying to find a parking spot during those busy Saturdays during the season. As to not interrupt the Fall baseball and softball little league schedule, the project will be done in phases.
The first phase is set to begin on Monday, September 9, 2019 at the Legion Fields but has already begun at the high school baseball complex. This first phase will close Fields 1, 2, and 6. The City has installed a temporary fence that runs between Fields 2 & 3, all the way to the outfield fence of Field 5. Heavy equipment like front loaders and excavators will begin arriving on Monday. Parents are asked to be mindful of where their children are at all times during this Fall season while inside the park.
This first phase of renovations is expected to be completed at the end of the Fall ball season with the second phase to begin shortly thereafter. The renovations will be worth the temporary hassle with top-notch facilities that generations will be able to enjoy in the future.
