VOLLEYBALL

Buford 2, St. Pius X 1; Buford 2, Marist 0

Buford had a significant non-region game day on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at home when the Wolves hosted both Class AAAAA state champion St. Pius X and Marist.

Buford (15-1) had not previously beaten St. Pius X in the current seniors’ tenure, but that changed as the Wolves came out with a win against the Golden Lions with set scores of 21-25, 25-14, 16-14.

In Buford’s second match of the evening, the Wolves beat Marist 25-11, 25-15.

Standouts for Buford in the win over St. Pius X were Sydney Austin (13 kills), Ashley Sturzoiu (12 kills), Payton Danley (8 kills, key blocks) and Alexa Flowers (17 digs).

Sturzoiu had a strong game against Marist with eight kills, while Trinity Haynes contributed with seven aces.

Up next for the Wolves will be a road trip to participate in a tournament in Florida with competition beginning Friday, Sept. 2.

SOFTBALL

Seckinger 10, Chestatee 0

The Seckinger varsity softball team traveled Tuesday, Aug. 30, to take on region opponent Chestatee, where the Jaguars would defeat the War Eagles 10-0 in five innings.

Recording the win for Seckinger (7-8, 4-3) on the mound was Addison Watson, who pitched all five innings, striking out five and walking none. Watson did not give up any hits during her 49 pitches, throwing 40 strikes.

Having a standout day for the Jaguars was Milan Torres, who was 2-for-3 with her first-ever career home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. In the field, Torres had a diving catch in center then threw to first to get a double play against the War Eagles.

Also contributing to Seckinger’s win offensively were McKenna Major, Kelley Feigen and Sophia Melanson.

The Jaguars were quick to capitalize on the six errors the War Eagles committed in the field to turn their six hits into 10 runs. Seckinger would commit one error during the game.

Next up for Seckinger is a region game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at East Forsyth.
