SUGAR HILL — Sugar Hill is proud to be a city that is nestled right along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. They recognize their responsibilities in regard to this vital waterway and as such have committed themselves to make sure the tributaries that flow into the Chattahoochee are as pristine as possible. Richland Creek is one such tributary that meanders through the city and eventually empties into the river.
Decades ago, the concerns about the environment were not on the minds of some landowners along Richland Creek. The land around the creek became dumping grounds and was never cleared of the debris. Sugar Hill has teamed up with the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper organization to “Sweep the Hooch.”
The Sweep the Hooch event is an annual event in which volunteers team up to clean the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries. The event to clean up around Richland Creek in Sugar Hill off of Suwanee Dam Road and Austin Garner Road will be held this coming Saturday, August 22 from 9 a.m. until around noon.
City Council Members Brandon Hembree and Taylor Anderson are still in need of volunteers to assist in helping to restore Richland Creek to a pristine condition. Children ages 10 – 16 are welcome to join in the cleanup efforts as long as a parent or guardian is present.
