Two arrests were made for illegal street racing in Buford after an officer with the Gwinnett County Police Department on patrol in the area witnessed two vehicles racing.
The officer noticed two vehicles racing along Buford Highway near Robert Bell Parkway shortly before midnight on Thursday, May 5. The drivers of the vehicles identified as Sugar Hill residents Zackary Boyd, 19, and Bennett Jewel, 25, were stopped by the officer and were arrested.
Boyd was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, street racing and several other traffic charges. Jewel was given a citation for street racing and was released on scene.
“The dangerous and illegal practices of stunt driving and street racing are a danger to Gwinnett residents on our roads and the Gwinnett Police Department is committed to keeping our roadways safe,” said J.R. Richter, Gwinnett County Police Department public information officer. “These activities risk injury and even death to participants and other motorists and they damage the roads costing taxpayers for repairs.”
Boyd was taken to the Gwinnett County Jail and was later released on a $19,102 bond.
