Suwanee City Council approves zoning ordinance amendment allowing backyard chickens

The Suwanee City Council unanimously voted to approve an amendment to the zoning ordinance that allows for backyard chickens at its Tuesday, Nov. 29, meeting held at Suwanee City Hall. 

The amendment would apply to single family residential properties. No one from the community spoke against the amendment. One resident, who owns backyard chickens, spoke for the amendment and presented the council with facts, which include that hens sleep from dusk until dawn, produce approximately the same decibel level of noise as an average human conversation (67 decibels) and that 10 chickens produce only two-thirds of the waste of a medium-sized dog with waste that is safe to use in composting.

The Suwanee City Council will hold a workshop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at City Hall, 330 Town Center Ave. That meeting will be followed by the council’s regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20.
