The Collins Hill High School varsity football team attended the Suwanee city council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, to be honored for winning the GHSA AAAAAAA state championship earlier this school year.
Mayor Jimmy Burnette made a proclamation in recognition of the team’s success this season. Not only did Collins Hill win the state championship, the team also finished the season with a record of 15-0.
“Whereas coach Gregory justly stated that this is going to be known as the greatest team to play at Collins Hill High School … Therefore, I, James M. Burnette Jr., as the mayor of the city of Suwanee, along with my fellow council members, do hereby declare Friday, February the 25th, 2022 Collins Hill Eagle day,” Burnette said.
Head coach Lenny Gregory then spoke about a number of his players, including seniors and captains, before saying, “I can go on and on and talk about every one of these kids, but I’m so proud of them and their accomplishments. I’m proud of my coaching staff and the sacrifices that they’ve made, and the time away from their families.”
Don Trawick also stood during the audience participation portion of the meeting to voice his concerns regarding traffic and reckless driving, particularly speeding, on the roads near his home near the intersection of Moore Road and Settles Bridge Road.
“I don’t clock it, but they’re going 50 or 60 miles per hour … I just want to know if something’s going to be done about that,” he said. “Somebody’s going to get hurt.”
Next, the council unanimously passed a Gwinnett County water and sewage easement for a parcel of land that will serve as the site of a new fire station.
The council then voted to allow the Gwinnett Department of Transportation to acquire property owned by the city on either side of Martin Farm Road for the purpose of constructing a bridge.
The city council also voted to authorize a payment of $336,225 to Peach State Construction Company as part of the contract for the Russell Street Sidewalk Project.
Council members also unanimously voted to accept the bid of the Dickerson Group Inc. in the value of $446,135 for a concrete maintenance contract that will accommodate small residential projects.
The council unanimously approved a draft of the 2022-2026 Short Term Work Program.
