Staff Reports
Gwinnett County Police received a call just before 12:30 p.m. about a suspicious person at 6617 Garrett Road in Buford, Ga. The caller who owns the home at that address said that her home is for sale and that she was notified that an unknown person appeared to be living in the home.
Officers responded to the home and saw a white male in the home. When the male saw the officers he fled out of sight into the home. Police were able to identify the suspect as Christopher Osterloh, age 36 from Dahlonega, Ga. Police were able to confirm that Osterloh did not have permission to be residing in the home.
Upon further research, police discovered that Osterloh was former military and that he was claiming to have weapons. Officers treated this as a barricaded gunman and S.W.A.T. team was activated. Negotiators attempted to get Osterloh to come out of the home but he refused.
After the failed negotiations, S.W.A.T. deployed a chemical irritant into the home. Osterloh surrendered shortly after the deployment of the irritant. He was taken into custody peacefully. No one was injured during the standoff. Osterloh was checked out at the scene by medical personnel and later transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center in Lawrenceville.
